1 Cross contamination

Have separate kitchen utensils and wash them in the dishwasher on a high heat setting. Replace wooden and plastic utensils and boards as they can have gluten in the scratches. Or keep your house a completely gluten free zone.

2. Labelling

Label jars and have separate butter etc. Use a spoon when dishing out jam etc. Never double dip. Label foods when you take them to work etc.

3. Inform people

Train all your friends and family in how not to gluten you. This is really important, especially if they believe a little gluten won’t hurt you.

4. Read labels carefully.

Look for the coeliac UK symbol. Buy from the free from ranges. Regularly re-check ingredients lists as they change. I’ve been caught out by this before. Don’t eat anything that uses the may contain or produced in a factory handling… unless you have contacted the company and had confirmation that it is actually safe to eat.

 5. Eating out

Eat in approved coeliac uk approved restaurants or use local coeliac groups to get recommendations on safe places to eat. I swear by my Facebook group for giving honest recommendations and warning of places they’ve had the misfortune to eat.

Glutened

If these measures fail and you have done your best to avoid being glutened. Whether that was in your home or when eating out. Yet, somehow you have still been glutened. These are my tips for getting back on the road to recovery as quickly as possible.

1. Drink.

Drink lots to flush out your system, water is best for this and even though I’m not a lover of drinking water I try and drink at least four glasses. I also swear by peppermint tea, it’s great for calming my stomach and it makes a change from water.

2. Rest.

Listen to your body, if your feeling tired, fatigued or drained. Allow yourself some extra rest. Let some of the chores slide and put your feet up or go to bed early.

3. Eat clean.

For a couple of days try eating a really bland diet of vegetables and some fruit. Something soothing and easy to digest like vegetable soup, is my go to food.

4. Avoid stimulants.

As hard as it may sound. It is best to avoid anything to stimulating for my stomach. I don’t drink caffeinated drinks, alcohol, chocolate or any fatty or processed foods.

5. Share.

Tell your friend and family what you are feeling like. Let people at work know you are a coeliac if you haven’t already. Don’t just expect people to understand why you feel so rubbish, if you’ve never told them.
