Gluten-Free English Scones: A Delightful Treat for Everyone

With a few simple ingredient swaps, you can enjoy these classic British treats without any gluten. Today, I’m going to show you how to make delicious gluten-free English scones.

Ingredients

To make these scones, you’ll need:

  • 250g gluten-free self-raising flour
  • 40g margarine
  • 125ml milk

For fruit scones, add:

  • 25g sugar
  • 75g currants or sultanas

For cheese scones, add:

  • 75g grated cheese
  • 1x 5 ml spoon of mustard or mixed herbs

  • Baking tray
  • Sieve
  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring jug
  • Palette knife
  • Weighing scales
  • Flour dredger
  • Rolling pin
  • Round scone cutters
  • Pastry brush
  • Oven gloves
  • Cooling rack

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 220ºC (gas mark 7).
  2. Grease a baking tray.
  3. Sift the flour into a bowl.
  4. Rub the margarine into the flour until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. If you’re making fruit scones, add the sugar and currants or sultanas at this point. If you’re making cheese scones, add the cheese and mustard or herbs.
  5. Pour in the milk and mix into a soft dough. Be sure to save a little of the milk for later.
  6. Place the dough on a floured working surface and knead lightly.
  7. Roll out the dough until it’s 1.5cm thick.
  8. Use a cutter to shape the dough into scones.
  9. Place the scones onto the baking tray. Brush the top of each scone with a little milk.
  10. Bake for 12 – 15 minutes, until golden brown.
  11. After baking, place the scones on a cooling rack to cool.
