Given to me by a friend at school after she made it for cake club. This is a fantastic Easy gluten free chocolate cake recipe is made with store cupboard ingredients, no need to go out and buy chocolate bars to make it.

Cooking with Kids?

This is a great recipe to make with children. Get them to help with the weighing and measuring. Kids love to help mixing up the cake too. Just ensure caution is taken when placing in and taking out of the oven.

Is it Vegan?

This recipe is suitable for people following a gluten free diet and can be adapted for a vegan diet. Simply switch the milk for a plant based milk, make sure your margaine is dairy free. Then use a flax seed egg or apple sauce to replace the eggs. You can find a great resource on egg replacements here.

Do I need any specialist equipment?

No specialist equipment needed for this gluten free chocolate cake, just basic kitchen tools and a round cake tin.

1 tbsp gluten free cocoa powder
2 tbsp hot water
100g margarine
100g caster sugar
2 eggs
100g gluten free self raising flour
1 tsp baking powder

40g butter
25g gluten free cocoa powder
3 tbsp milk
100g icing sugar


  1. Preheat the oven to 180c gas mark 4
  2. Grease and line a 20cm round cake tin.
  3. Mix cocoa powder with hot water in a mixing bowl and leave to cool.
  4. Add all the other cake ingredients and beat for 3 minutes.
  5. Pour into the cake tin and bake for 35 minutes until springy on the top.
  6. Turn out and leave to cool
  7. Make the icing: Melt the butter in a saucepan and then add the cocoa.
  8. Cook for 1 minute. Remove from the heat and add the milk and the icing sugar.
  9. Beat well and leave to cool until thick enough to spread on the top of the cake.
